What is liposuction?

Liposuction literally means sucking away fat. Liposuction is a surgical procedure for fat removal and the most popular aesthetic procedure worldwide. Do you suffer from fat deposits on certain parts of the body and would like to get rid of them? Liposuction offers the solution!

Optionally, opt for liposculpture, where we can sculpt or reuse your fat cells to add more shape to other parts of the body (such as buttocks or breasts or sculpting a six-pack).

When to choose liposuction or liposculpture?

Liposuction focuses on the removal of excess fat (aspiration) from specific areas of the body to improve contours. Liposculpture goes further by not only removing fat but also fine-tuning the body shape (such as for a six-pack in men) or repositioning the fat by re-injecting it (for example, in the breasts or buttocks). Liposculpture with lipofilling offers more detailed and artistic shaping. You can read more about it on our relevant web pages on liposculpture and lipofilling.

Modern Liposuction techniques

Liposuction is a specialised customised treatment. The Wellness Kliniek High Tech Liposuction method (WKHT) is a combination of different techniques such as PAL, SWT and High Definition Contouring (HD Lipo). Combinations of these techniques offer significant advantages:

  • More volume removal, with great precision.
  • Beautiful results in terms of skin tightening and contouring.
  • Minimal risk of complications and damage to blood vessels.
  • Shorter recovery time, without scars!

By offering customised treatment, we always achieve optimal results!

We zoom in on the different liposuction techniques. Then we continue with a list of the most frequently asked questions about liposuction at Wellness Kliniek. If your question and answer are not among them, give us a call. We are happy to be at your service.

Soft-wet technique (SWT)

SWT stands for Soft-Wet Technique, also known as TSI (Tumescent Soft Jet Infiltration). This modern liposuction technique is a virtually painless treatment. The doctor removes excess fat in a strictly controlled manner.

A large amount of fluid is injected (= soft jet infiltration). This fluid causes the fat tissue to swell and dissolve. As a result, the excess fat can be easily removed.

Power assisted liposculpture (PAL)

PAL stands for Power Assisted Liposuction. Specifically, it means that liposuction is done with soft and fast vibrating needles. Thus, fat cells are broken down by the movement in cannulas. Then, that fat is sucked out and drained. We also apply this method to harder-to-treat areas such as the back, flanks and male breasts.

PAL lipo uses a motorised cannula that moves back and forth quickly, making it easier to break down and remove the fat. The benefit is efficient fat removal and refined contouring.

High-Definition Liposculpture (HD Lipo)

HD Liposculpture focuses on refining body contours by accurately sculpting fat. This method gives excellent contour definition and is suitable for athletes and people who have little or no excess fat but want a highly sculpted look, such as a six-pack.

Water-Assisted Liposuction (WAL)

WAL liposuction uses a water-jet system, like Body-Jet, to loosen and remove fat cells. The water jet is gentle and selective, minimising damage to surrounding tissues.

WAL Body-Jet can be used to extract smaller to medium amounts of fat. For larger amounts of fat removal, this method is less suitable.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

This method uses laser energy from brands such as SmartLipo and SlimLipo to heat fat cells before removing them. Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL) can be more expensive and have a longer procedure time than the above methods. There is a risk of burns. The laser liposuction method is especially suitable for removing smaller amounts of fat.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

This technique uses ultrasonic energy to make fat cells more fluid, facilitating their removal. Well-known devices are VASER or VASERlipo. The VASER liposuction method is suitable for refining contours and removing smaller amounts of fat, but is less suitable for patients who want larger amounts of fat sucked out.

Radiofrequency-Assisted Liposuction (RFAL)

RFAL liposuction like BodyTite uses radiofrequency energy and can be more expensive. This method has risks such as burns and thermal damage to the tissues. The method, like Laser lipo and VASER lipo, is less suitable for large amounts of fat removal.

Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting)

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical liposuction method that freezes and destroys fat cells. The dead fat cells are then disposed of naturally by the body. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) can easily be performed by a non-physician, but has the greatest risk of developing paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), a rare but serious side effect in which fat cells in the treated area, instead of shrinking, actually grow and harden. The method is not suitable for larger amounts of fat removal and is not recommended at Wellness Kliniek.

Liposuction for women and men

Liposuction and liposculpture are popular procedures for both women and men. Women, for example, often choose areas such as legs, hips and abdomen. Liposuction for men is often performed on the legs, chest and double chin. Many more zones are possible. Take a look at the above image of men's and women's bodies to get a good idea of the liposuction zones to be treated.

Frequently asked questions about liposuction

How much fat can I have removed with liposuction?

Liposuction can usually safely remove between 2 and 5 litres of fat per session, depending on your needs, health and body composition. The exact volume varies from patient to patient and is determined by the doctor to minimise health risks.

What does liposuction cost in Europe and Belgium?

The cost of liposuction tends to be cheaper in Belgium than in the UK. This is why many people travel to clinics like the Wellness Kliniek in Genk, Belgium. Generally, the cost of liposuction in the UK is between £2,000 and £5,000 per symmetrical area. In Belgium, the cost of liposuction is generally lower. Compare liposuction rates and check out Wellness Kliniek's liposuction prices for possible cheap liposuction price offers.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is suitable for ladies and gentlemen who are healthy and suffer from localised fat deposits, for example on the buttocks, legs, arms, abdomen, under the chin or in the face (cheeks). This is not a method to lose weight or easily lose (a lot of) weight, so it is really meant for people who cannot lose local fat with healthy eating and exercise. A consultation with the liposuction doctor is important to assess your health, medical history and specific goals.

Is liposuction of the face and cheeks safe?

A bichotomy, also known as buccal fat removal, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat from the cheeks to refine facial contours and give the cheeks a slimmer appearance. This procedure specifically targets the buccal fat pad located deep in the cheeks. A bichotomy performed by an experienced doctor at a clinic with an officially recognised quality mark, such as at Wellness Kliniek, is the best guarantee of safe treatment.

Liposuction before and after: what can I expect?

Before we schedule the treatment, the doctor will of course have a detailed discussion with you. We see whether liposuction is suitable for you and whether or not you would like to opt for liposculpture, i.e. the reinsertion of purified fat cells on other parts of the body (to emphasise certain body shapes). However, there would have to be enough fat for this, otherwise it would not be effective enough.

The specialists at Wellness Kliniek give you honest advice on the achievable liposuction results for your body, so you know in advance what to expect. They are experienced in this and know what is and is not possible. We definitely recommend viewing liposuction before and after photos, so that you get a better idea of what to expect.

How does liposuction happen?

During liposuction, the doctor makes small punctures in the area to be treated, after which a thin tube (cannula) is inserted to suck away fat cells using a vacuum pump. The procedure takes place under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the size of the area and your comfort level.

How long does liposuction take?

The average treatment at Wellness Kliniek takes around 45 minutes, although the exact time depends on the number of areas to be treated. The puncture holes are very small (approx. 3 mm) so there is little or no scarring.

What to watch out for after liposuction?

After liposuction treatment, you usually get an elastic gaine (band) or tights. At Wellness Kliniek, these are of course also included in the all-in price!

After liposuction, it is important to wear compression garments, such as gaine or tights, to reduce swelling and support your skin during the healing process. These compression garments should usually be worn for four to six weeks, depending on your doctor's instructions.

Can I go home the same day after liposuction?

Yes, you can go home the same day after liposuction or liposculpture, as the treatment is an outpatient procedure. However, it is important that you have someone to take you home and support you for the first 24 hours after the procedure. You will not be allowed to drive yourself.

How long does recovery take after liposuction?

After liposuction, you can expect swelling, bruising and discomfort that may last for several weeks. A reddish fluid may leak from the wounds in the first few days after the procedure. So it is best to use a mattress pad to sleep on the first night.

You will wear compression garments, an elastic gaine, band or tights, to get nice, tight skin and promote healing. Most people can resume all normal activities after a few days to a week, depending on the extent of the liposuction treatment.

Can I work and exercise after liposuction?

It is important to take a few days' rest after liposuction. Most people take a few days off before returning to work. We recommend resuming light daily activities only after 4-8 days. During this period, do continue to exercise gently.

After 10 days, you may resume sports, swimming and cycling. 4 weeks later, you will normally be fully recovered and can do heavier work. By the way, your doctor will always advise you personally based on the liposuction treatment performed on you.

Does liposuction hurt?

You will not feel any pain during the liposuction procedure because it is performed under local or general anaesthesia. After the liposuction procedure, you may experience some muscle stiffness and pain, but this can usually be well controlled with painkillers and rest.

Will I keep feeling after liposuction?

After liposuction, there may be temporary reduced sensation or numbness in the treated area, which can last for several weeks to months. In most cases, sensation recovers completely over time. Permanent changes in sensation are rare, but it is important to discuss the risks with your doctor before undergoing liposuction. Your doctor may prescribe you post-operative massage or lymphatic drainage to aid recovery.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

Yes, the results of liposuction are permanent, as the removed fat cells do not regrow. However, the remaining fat cells may grow larger and thicker. It is important to maintain a stable weight, because if you gain weight, the result of liposuction may fade.

For the liposuction result to be permanent, it is important to keep watching your weight or monitoring your fat percentage. If you find this difficult, you can, for instance, hire a nutrition coach and/or sports coach. In most cases, by the way, it is possible to undergo liposuction again, in the same or another area of the body.

Liposuction or diet: what is the difference in results?

Every body has a certain amount of fat cells. These cells can swell due to hormones or a certain lifestyle, including (bad) eating habits. Diet causes the fat cells to become smaller, making you lose weight. Liposuction, on the other hand, actually removes the fat cells!

After liposuction, the body no longer produces new fat cells (this happens during puberty). After liposuction, however, you do have remaining fat cells in your body. They can grow bigger, causing you to gain weight.

How can I prepare for liposuction?

To prepare for liposuction, it is best to stop smoking and avoid blood-thinning drugs or supplements for several weeks before the procedure. Make sure you have a nice recovery environment and arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Do I need to lose weight for liposuction?

Are you (very) overweight? If so, we always recommend that you lose weight, possibly under supervision. Liposuction is not a solution for general weight loss and is only suitable for removing stubborn local fat deposits. If you are (very) overweight, it is better to lose some weight through diet and exercise first, after which liposuction can be considered for contour improvement.

Is it possible to get liposuction for swollen lower legs and ankles?

Some people suffer from accumulations of fluid (oedema) in the legs and ankles. Unfortunately, liposuction has little to no effect on this condition. For oedema in the legs and ankles, other treatments such as compression therapy, medication, or lymphatic drainage are better suited. Do you suffer from lipoedema? Then liposuction is suitable.

What is liposuction for lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of fat cells, usually in the legs, thighs and sometimes arms. This can lead to pain, tenderness, and localised swelling. Lipoedema is often confused with obesity or lymphoedema, but it is distinguished by the disproportionate accumulation of fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction can help.

Lipoedema liposuction before and after, what can I expect?

Liposuction offers an effective treatment for lipoedema by targeted removal of excess fat, leading to improved mobility and reduced pain. After liposuction for lipoedema, you can expect a significant reduction in pain, swelling and improved mobility, along with slimmer and better-shaped contours. Recovery includes several weeks of swelling and discomfort, with wearing compression garments for optimal results and long-term relief.

Is liposuction safe? And what do you look out for?

Liposuction is safe when performed by a skilled and experienced doctor at a clinic with a quality label, such as at Wellness Kliniek. It is important that your doctor has a lot of experience in aesthetic treatments and preferably does it full-time.

It is also important to have a full medical consultation to discuss your suitability for liposuction and any risks. After that, follow all preoperative instructions from your doctor so that you are well prepared for the procedure.

Can I undergo liposuction multiple times?

Yes, you can undergo multiple liposuction of the same area, but it is important to leave enough time between procedures. Discuss with your doctor why you are considering an additional procedure and whether it is safe and suitable for your specific situation. Liposuction of another area is, of course, also possible. The doctors at Wellness Kliniek do recommend waiting at least six weeks between treatments.

What is the difference between liposuction and lipofilling?

Lipofilling or lipotransfer means that the doctor can transplant fat from one part of the body to another. For example, if you have excess fat on your legs, we can suck it out, treat it and inject it into your breasts (breast augmentation with your own fat). Of course, in a safe way, where the fat is first purified before transplanting it to your breasts or buttocks. Read more about the possibilities of fat grafting, also called lipofilling, here.

What is the difference between liposuction, lipofilling and liposculpture?

'Lipo' is a shortened form of the Greek word 'lipos', meaning 'fat'. In medical terms, 'lipo' refers to procedures involving fat, such as liposuction (removing fat), liposculpture (shaping fat) and lipofilling (filling with fat).

  1. Liposuction literally means 'sucking out fat'.
  2. Lipofilling literally means 'filling with fat'.
  3. Liposculpture: means shaping or sculpting fat. If both number 1 and 2 are applied, we refer to this term.

So liposuction, liposculpture and lipofilling are three different techniques that can be used by a specialist liposuction doctor to enhance your figure. Read all about it on our information pages on lipofilling and liposculpture.

What are the benefits of liposuction?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells that you just can't seem to get rid of through exercise and dieting. This makes it a valuable and effective technique to remove subcutaneous, stubborn fat. Liposuction is precise. The procedure is considered safe (if performed professionally) and leaves no scars!

What are the disadvantages of liposuction?

The disadvantages of liposuction include possible side effects such as swelling, bruising, pain, and infection, as well as the risk of irregular contours or asymmetry. In addition, you need to take several days off as a recovery time is required. Another drawback is that the result is only permanent if you maintain a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle.

What are possible complications of liposuction?

Although most people suffer little after liposuction, you still need to be well informed about the possible liposuction complications and risks with liposuction.

Possible complications with liposuction include infections, blood clots, asymmetry, and irregular contours, as well as reactions to the anaesthetic. There is also a risk of seroma (fluid accumulation), nerve damage, and skin changes such as discolouration or numbness. Fortunately, these complications are rare, but you should still be aware that not everything always goes according to plan.

I have sagging skin after liposuction, is that normal?

Yes, sagging, wrinkled skin can occur after liposuction, especially if skin elasticity is reduced due to ageing or significant weight changes. To what extent this occurs in your case normally depends on your skin quality and the amount of fat removed. So it can vary a lot from person to person. Your skin needs some time to get used to it. For some patients, an additional procedure, such as a skin tightening or lift, may be needed to achieve the desired contours.

Fat removal: in which area is liposuction most effective?

Liposuction is most effective in areas with stubborn fat deposits such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, flanks (love handles), upper arms, back, under the chin, in the cheeks and in male breast reduction. These areas usually respond well to treatment and can provide significantly improved contours.

Fat removal: in which area is liposuction most commonly applied?

Liposuction is most commonly used at Wellness Kliniek for the abdomen (above and below the navel), hips, thighs and flanks (love handles), arms, male breasts, in the face, the flanks above and below the bra strap and in the case of a double chin, as these areas often have stubborn fat that is difficult to remove with diet and exercise. These areas usually offer the best results and most visible improvements in body contours after the liposuction procedure.

Liposuction double chin, what to look out for?

Liposuction under the chin can help remove excess fat or a double chin, for improving the jawline. It is a minor procedure with often great results. It is important to choose an experienced doctor and have realistic expectations, as the skin elasticity and anatomy of your chin and neck can affect the final result.

Double chin liposuction or chin liposuction is a popular procedure at Wellness Kliniek. On the treatment page about double chin treatments, you can read more about chin liposuction.

Liposuction legs, does it work?

Absolutely! Liposuction of thighs: inner, outer and knees are the most popular treatments. Liposuction of calves and ankles can also be done.

  • Liposuction outer thighs: are you familiar with the term 'saddlebag legs'? That refers to the fat deposits on the sides of your legs, a place where that fat is very difficult to get rid of (despite endless dieting and exercise). Vacuuming away fat in this spot is very effective!
  • Inner thigh liposuction: which involves the inside of your legs, is a frequently chosen procedure. This treatment helps reduce friction, redness and discomfort that sometimes occur when the thighs rub together.
  • Liposuction knees: can also produce beautiful results, to achieve slimmer leg contours.
  • Liposuction calves and ankles is suitable for excessively thick calves and ankles due to localised fat deposits.
