Risks and Recovery

The most common risks and complications involved with facelift surgery are rejection of the permanent thread (MACS Lift), sensory disturbance, skin discolouration, tissue necrosis, assymetry, problematic scar formation, pain and allergic reactions to the anaesthetic.

Despite the fact that the procedure is performed in a totally sterile environment there is still a small risk of infection, even though it is greatly reduced, to actually less than 1%. Sometimes the wound doesn't heal properly or there is post-operative bleeding.

• After the treament you will be given special aftercare instructions. It is very important that you follow them carefully.
• After 5 to 14 days (depending on the type of facelift) you come back for a check-up. At this consultation the stitches are removed.
• Usually a facelift bandage is worn for one week following the operation.

The Anaesthetic

Due to progress made in sedation techniques, invasive cosmetic procedures can now be performed without the patient being subjected to the side-effects of a general anaesthetic: Minilift, Feather Lift and liposculpture of the neck can be performed with a local anaesthetic or under intravenous sedation. An SMAS facelift, SMAS neck lift, forehead lift and eyebrow lift is performed under intravenous sedation..
With more effective pain relief a light form of anaesthesia is sufficient. Unlike traditional anaesthesia your breathing will not be controlled mechanically. You will carry on breathing and swallowing while you are asleep and you won't feel any pain. A couple of hours after the procedure you feel fit and well and do not experience any of the unpleasant side-effects of a general anaesthetic.

These modern techniques in anaesthesia mean that longer surgical procedures can now be carried out safely without any unnecessary risks.
